Delivering a Meal or a Smile?

Meals on Wheels Western Michigan was invited to a health expo at Camelot Woods this past Wednesday. Open to the public, senior vendors welcomed the community to come in and learn more about the senior services available in West Michigan.

This was a great opportunity for us. We were able to captivate those in need in a welcoming space. Two of our leadership staff, Pantry Manager Danielle Simmons and Community Program Manager Tammy Mick, attended the expo. While many seniors found interest in our services, some were already quite familiar with us. One woman in particular made a huge impact on Danielle and Tammy. The woman approached their table to tell our staff, “You guys do great work… but Ken is the best driver ever!” Who she was referring to was a name that they had heard before. Ken has been a phenomenal driver for Meals on Wheels for 4 years. Recently, Ken has retired. Our new friend from the expo is very optimistic that he will return though.

It is through experiences, like this, that make us not only proud of what we are able to do for a senior, but so proud of who we are as a team. We have a terrific staff of close to 100 people, in addition to a loyal volunteer base, that have chosen to make everyday a day to give back. Our team is motivated to not only deliver a meal to a senior, but to leave them with joy and happiness. It is through the relationship that we are able to leave the biggest impact. So are we delivering a meal or a smile? I think both.
