Meals on Wheels recipient, Robert, is 90 years old. He has been enjoying several meals each week from Meals on Wheels Western Michigan since April 2015. Robert told us, “the meals have been a blessing after my back surgery.”

Back in spring 2015, Robert took a nasty fall, fracturing his spine. Upon being discharged from the hospital, they referred him to Meals on Wheels services. We were happy to accommodate Robert with his needs. With his new injury, he found grocery shopping, heavy cleaning, and cooking his meals to be a huge stress in his life. In addition to his weak back, Robert suffers from Macular Degeneration, which effects his ability to see and in return, makes reading cook instructions very difficult.

Robert lives alone now, after losing his wife of 62 years in May 2011. He travels around his home with the assistance of a walker. When first starting the Meals on Wheels program, he was a frail 90 pounds. Thankfully, in a year, he has managed to gain 10 pounds. Part of his eating difficulties are attributed to the pain he experiences in his mouth when eating tough food. To ease his difficulties, we deliver mechanical meals, or ground up meals, to Robert. In addition to the ground meals, Robert is a recipient of our low-cost Ensure program. Both his meals and Ensure are delivered straight to his door.
