Michael has been happily receiving Meals on Wheels Western Michigan’s services for three years, and he recently celebrated his 91st birthday! Michael has low mobility and his fair share of health issues. When he started on our program he was overweight, but after a few months of receiving our meals he reached, and has maintained, a healthy weight.

In spring 2015, Michael’s driver was quite the lifesaver. One morning Michael did not answer the door when his driver, Dan, arrived. Dan became very worried and called the client services team, who in turn notified Michael’s family. Michael’s family quickly went to check on him and found him lying on the floor with a broken hip. Two of Michael’s family members gratefully said, “It was Meals on Wheels and his faithful driver who helped save him.”

Michael recovered in the hospital last summer, and his family and friends still continue to express their gratitude. Michael’s doctor expressed his own appreciation when calling us with thanks, “I called to thank Meals on Wheels again for notifying the family about the client not answering the door.” Michael had been lying on the floor with a broken hip for sixteen hours! This story explains why family and the role of our diligent drivers are key to our program. We are so glad that we were able to serve Michael and help in the assistance of returning him to his home, where he now remains, healthy and happy.
