Five Surprising Things You Don’t Know About Home Delivered Meals (That You Should)

Our Home Delivered Meals program serves seniors in Kent and Allegan Counties who are 60 or older and have difficulty leaving home to shop for groceries and cook meals on their own. Last year, this program helped over 2,800 seniors by providing a nutritionally balanced meal that not only tasted good but was also easy to prepare. Home Delivered Meals aren’t just about food. They’re about dignity, independence, and connection.

Every knock at the door tells a bigger story. Behind each Home Delivered Meal is a system of care designed to nourish bodies, celebrate independence, and reduce isolation. Here are five surprising things you don’t know about Home Delivered Meals that make a meaningful difference.

1. Home Delivered Meals Come at No Cost to the Client

When a senior receives Home Delivered Meals, their meals are provided on a donation basis. We ask all participants to simply give what they can, when they can, and if they can. It really helps lessen the financial burden that many seniors face.

“This has been a struggling month for me in paying my bills. But, there is one thing I can count on daily, and that is to be eating three meals a day, thanks to Meals on Wheels Western Michigan. My bank account may be empty, but my stomach is happy!” ~ James

Many clients are proud to donate toward the cost of their meals, but no eligible senior is denied meals if they are unable to contribute financially.

2. Getting Started Is Easier Than You Think

If you are 60 or older and have difficulty leaving home to get groceries/shop and cook meals on your own, you could apply for Home Delivered Meals. Get started by filling out our online application. After you apply, a Care Coordinator will be in touch to get to know you and your needs better, typically within one business day. The whole goal is to get you meals as soon as possible, so our care coordinators move fast to get you on a route the following week you apply.

If you aren’t sure if you qualify, apply anyway, and we will review your options. Our care team can connect you with other resources in the area that help those in need.

You may also call our office at 616-459-3111 and press 1. Please leave a message requesting a call back. We’ll return calls in the order they’re received.

3. Meals Are Balanced for Health Without Sacrificing Flavor

We use over 21 herbs and spices to make our nutritionally balanced and delicious meals from scratch. Our meals are developed by our Executive Chef and Registered Dietitian and prepared in our Grandville kitchen with fresh ingredients. We know that eating healthy makes a difference, especially as we age. That’s why we work hard on providing nutrition across our meals and we educate seniors on why it matters.

When it comes to our meals, we listen to feedback from our seniors to see how the meals are received. Things like taste and texture help us decide what meals we need to tweak or remove completely. Feedback helps us improve and grow.

4. Quality Ingredients Make a Real Difference

Home Delivered Meals are made with care, using quality ingredients that support health without sacrificing flavor. When meals are prepared with intention, seniors can look forward to food that feels satisfying and familiar. We believe that eating well plays an important role in maintaining health, independence, and quality of life as you age.

5. Choice Is Part of the Experience—Meals Are Not One-Size-Fits-All

With over 30 different meals, including traditional favorites like BBQ chicken and pot roast, meals from around the world like sweet and sour chicken or tacos, and even breakfast options like the French toast bake or western scramble, we have something for everyone. See what’s on the Fall/Winter menu.

Along with the many meal options we provide, we also have a menu designed for people who have difficulty chewing and swallowing. Our minced/moist meals are prepared and cut into smaller portions to make chewing easier. Our pureed meals are for people who have trouble swallowing. Everything is blended to a smooth consistency, making the meals easier to swallow, but with the same great flavor people love.

Now you know! These five things tell an important story about Home Delivered Meals—one that goes far beyond just the knock at the door. There is no cost to receive meals, getting started is simple, and every meal is thoughtfully prepared to support health, flavor, and personal choice. From quality ingredients to balanced nutrition, each meal is prepared with dignity, independence, and well-being in mind.

When you put it all together, Home Delivered Meals aren’t just about what’s on the plate—they’re about making it easier for seniors to age with independence, comfort, and connection.

We deliver meals like this so seniors know they are not forgotten or alone
