Volunteer of the Month: Sherri Jahnke

Sherri has been a dedicated volunteer delivery driver for Meals on Wheels Western Michigan for about a year now, delivering the same route each Monday. And since she’s had the opportunity to be on the same route each week, she has been able to build a relationship with her clients, as they are the same each time she delivers. Sherri is so helpful to our program, she can always be relied upon to be deliver her route each week and even help out in other areas when needed.

It is evident when speaking with Sherri that she has a heart for volunteering and giving back. Before coming to Meals on Wheels, she volunteered with Flat River Outreach Ministries in Lowell for about ten years. There she was the Assistant Director of the thrift store and held many other jobs within the organization as well. Sherri also tutors second through fifth graders on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Lowell, where she resides. And before retiring, Sherri was a merchandiser for Zeigler Ford and drove all around the country. Sherri was born and raised in Grand Rapids and has lived in Lowell for about 30 years now with her husband and with her two sons and four grandchildren living nearby too. She loves animals, has two dogs and a cat that she enjoys taking for walks and she also loves to read, mysteries being her favorite.

There are many parts to volunteering that Sherri enjoys, but the people are what’s most important to her. She says she ‘loves the clients, they are fun and they are all so different, they know you and its nice to have that consistency’. When asked why she volunteers, Sherri answered simply, “because I am able. There is a need and I am able to fill that and help out. You don’t do it to get praise and if that’s why you’re doing it, you shouldn’t be volunteering.” Her humility shows through in her willingness to do whatever is needed to help others out. The delivery department is so appreciative of Sherri as she often runs two routes at a time and comes in on her unscheduled days to help out.

We are so thankful for Sherri’s commitment to our program and so grateful to have her as a part of our team. We appreciate her, and others like her who give so generously of their time to reach homebound seniors in our community.  Thank you, Sherri!
