Volunteer of the Month: Theresa Peterlein

Theresa has been volunteering with Meals on Wheels Western Michigan for about 6 months now, but it feels like she’s been with us for much longer! Theresa spends a few hours every Tuesday volunteering in our kitchen prepping and cooking meals that go out to our many dining sites all over Kent and Allegan County, as well as the meals that are delivered to our home bound clients. Theresa loves helping out in the kitchen and says, “the people at Meals on Wheels are wonderful, it’s like one big family.”

Theresa is no stranger to the kitchen, as she also volunteers as a cook at Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids and is the President of the polish hall, Kosciuszko, also located in Grand Rapids. She cooks twice a week at the polish hall and much of her time is spent there during Pulaski Days in the summer. Born and raised in the Grand Rapids area, Theresa spent 35 years in the publishing business and is now retired and enjoying giving back to her community.

Looking for places to volunteer her time with seniors, Theresa came upon Meals and Wheels and it has become an absolute perfect fit. The kitchen staff is so happy that Theresa came to volunteer, always expressing what a joy she is to work with and to simply be around. Brenda Hayes, our head cook, says, “Theresa is outstanding, she will do anything that she is asked and is so cheerful to work with!” Just this week, Theresa brought in fortune cookies to share with the ladies she works with, complete with special, handwritten fortunes that she created. She loves cooking desserts, cheesecakes in particular, and will often bring in treats to share with everyone she is working with.

We are so thankful for Theresa’s commitment to our program and so grateful to have her as a part of our team. We appreciate her, and others like her who give so generously of their time to support seniors in our community.  Thank you, Theresa!
