Volunteer of the Month: Barb Smalley

Barb has been a dedicated volunteer at our dining site at Leonard Terrace since it opened two years ago. You can find her at the sign in table on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, greeting guests as they come in to enjoy their meal.
Barb has been living in Leonard Terrace for six years now and is a well-known member of the community there, as she likes to be very involved. On Tuesday nights, Barb runs the weekly Bingo gatherings. She is the one to organize the prizes and call the numbers and has been doing so for four years. She also organizes a coffee social hour on Tuesday and Friday mornings in the community room, where tenants can come down and drink coffee and chat and socialize with their neighbors and friends. Barb is always on the go, but she likes it that way, she enjoys being active and keeping busy, all while interacting with the community and helping out where she can.
Barb was born and raised in the Grand Rapids area, but has moved a few times within the area, including Holland and Cedar Springs. She raised her two kids, a son and a daughter in Grand Rapids and they’ve since moved around Michigan for college. Her son lives nearby in Mt. Pleasant and her daughter in Kalamazoo. Before retiring, Barb held an array of jobs, her latest as a housekeeper at an assisted living home.
Barb is much appreciated by the staff at Leonard Terrace for all that she does. Sandra, the site supervisor says, “Barb is always cheerful, willing to help, and very reliable.” And Barb doesn’t do it for the recognition, she says, “I volunteer because I enjoy helping other people and I am able to, so why not.”
We are so thankful for Barb’s commitment to our program and so grateful to have her as a part of our team. We appreciate her, and others like her who give so generously of their time to reach homebound seniors in our community. Thank you, Barb!
